Cairo, September 4, 2025 — Following our joint investigation with the New Arab Investigations unit (TNA), “Deadly Migration: Maltese Hunters Turn Migratory Bird Paths into Hell” (May 2025), significant policy changes have been enacted by the Egyptian government.
On 1 September 2025, the Ministry of Environment issued a new ministerial decree regulating tourist hunting areas nationwide. Notably, the New Valley Governorate has been removed from the list of permitted hunting areas, a move directly linked to the concerns we raised regarding unsustainable and illegal hunting practices targeting migratory birds in the region.
Additionally, the decree maintains the existing ban on hunting in Lake Nasser, one of Egypt’s most critical ecosystems for migratory species.
These decisions represent a significant step forward in protecting Egypt’s biodiversity. They demonstrate how evidence-based investigations can lead to tangible conservation outcomes and strengthen the enforcement of wildlife protection laws.
At Bridges Investigations, we remain committed to uncovering environmental crimes and holding those responsible to account.
