This report is based primarily on extensive interviews with “Anas,” a pseudonym used to protect the identity of a man who spent much of his childhood and adolescence within the community of Arab families associated with militant groups in Afghanistan and the surrounding region.

His testimony covers events he witnessed as a child as well as information he later learned from his father, relatives and members of the community around him. Where possible, dates, locations, individuals and major historical events described in his account were checked against publicly available records, contemporary reporting and other documentary sources.

Some details concerning life inside closed militant networks, private conversations and events witnessed only by Anas or members of his family could not be independently verified. In those cases, the report attributes the information explicitly to Anas and presents it as his recollection rather than independently established fact.
